Weeding project - why weed?
What is weeding? Weeding is an ongoing process of removing resources from a library collection. Old and worn resources should be removed continuously. Sometimes books are not needed due to curriculum changes. The librarian will need to analyze the collection, this allows the librarian to be aware of weaknesses and strengths within the library. The librarian must become familiar with the schools curriculum, analyze the collection, and make a plan. This plan should include a way to begin removing books. When dated and worn books are removed space is opened up for new more relevant books. The space on the shelves allows patrons to locate resources more effectively.
Using the Dewey Decimal Classification system fables, folklores, and fairytales can be found in the 398 section. According to Lowe (2012), books in the 398's should be discarded if they are published before 1981. They are considered useful but close to discard age if they were published between 1982 - 1986. Books published after 1987 should be kept but replaced if newer versions are available or the books become torn and worn.
